Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure offered by Dr. Waitze where excess tissue and skin are removed from the breasts. The smaller breasts are then reshaped and the nipples are repositioned. Asymmetries can be resolved during this process.

Why Do Women Get Breast Reduction Surgery?

Women who experience physical, psychological, and/or emotional distress due to their large breasts can benefit from a reduction mammaplasty.

Breast reduction surgery can relieve the discomfort caused by large breasts, such as back, neck and shoulder pain and grooves in the shoulders from bra straps, excessive sweating, rashes and skin infections under the breasts. Large breasts can also prevent women from living an active daily life.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Anyone at any age can undergo a breast reduction surgery. However, allowing the breasts to fully form before the surgery is undertaken is ideal when it comes to achieving long-lasting results. Ideal candidates are in overall good health and have realistic expectations.

Which Techniques Does a Breast Reduction Surgery Involve?

There are different options for breast reduction surgery which are determined by the amount of skin and breast tissue that need to be removed.

Depending on the amount of reduction desired, as well as the composition of the breasts, Dr. Waitze can opt for either excision surgery or a combination of excision and liposuction. While the surgical procedure is used to reshape the breast, the nipples and the areola, liposuction is used to remove excess fatty tissue.

The desired results of the patient will determine the location and extent of final scars on the breast. Post-surgical marks can be camouflaged and will fade over time.

There are two main types of breast reductions: one that will result in an “anchor type” of incision and a limited short scar technique, otherwise known as a “lollipop” incision. The anchor incision allows for removal of larger amounts of tissue.

What Happens During the Breast Reduction Procedure?

A breast reduction surgery takes two to five hours. It can be performed as an outpatient surgery, and patients can leave the same day after being carefully monitored.

During the procedure, anesthesia will be administered. Dr. Waitze will then perform the breast reduction procedure, removing excess tissue. The areola is also decreased in size at this time and the nipple is raised to a more appealing and attractive location.

After the procedure, Dr. Waitze uses sutures, surgical tape, or skin adhesives to close the incisions.

Recovery and Healing

After the surgical procedure is completed and the patient has returned home, the healing process can begin. Bruising and swelling will be present, and a supportive surgical bra without underwire must be worn as recommended.

Time off from work will be required. The patient will be asked to avoid intense physical activity for several weeks, after which they can resume their daily routine as normal.
